How the FIRE Number is Calculated

The FIRE Number uses the 4% Rule from the Trinity Study (1998) โ€” withdrawing 4% annually from a diversified portfolio has shown a very high success rate over 30-year retirement periods.

FIRE Number = Annual Spending รท Safe Withdrawal Rate
Example: $60,000 รท 0.04 = $1,500,000

Years to FIRE uses compound growth:
FV = PVร—(1+r)โฟ + PMTร—[(1+r)โฟโˆ’1]/r

Source: Bengen (1994), Trinity Study (1998). Assumes diversified 50โ€“75% equity portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FIRE Number? โ–ผ
Your FIRE Number is the total portfolio you need to sustain your lifestyle indefinitely without working. Divide annual spending by your safe withdrawal rate. $50,000/year at 4% gives a FIRE Number of $1,250,000.
Is the 4% rule still valid in 2026? โ–ผ
The 4% rule was designed for 30-year retirements. For early retirees planning 40 to 50 years, many planners recommend a more conservative 3 to 3.5% withdrawal rate. Adjust the slider to model your scenario.
What are the types of FIRE? โ–ผ
Lean FIRE is under $40,000/year spending. Fat FIRE is $100,000+/year. Coast FIRE means saving enough early that growth alone carries you. Barista FIRE means semi-retiring with minimal part-time income.
Does this include Social Security? โ–ผ
No. If you plan to receive Social Security, subtract your expected annual benefit from your annual spending before entering it to get a more accurate FIRE Number.
